Make Dreams Come True with Cinderella Nail Art
Dare to Dream
Disney’s theme for Cinderella is “dare to dream”. It’s because no matter how bad things get, she still believes things can get better. She believes in love and stays kind-hearted despite being treated harshly. And when she gets a chance to follow her dream, she courageously jumps right in.
Cinderella’s Story Has Deep Roots
Did you know that the original Cinderella story is thousands of years old? The original tale from ancient Egypt was about an enslaved woman named “Rhodopis” (“rosy cheeks”). An eagle flew off with her sandal and dropped it in the lap of the king of Egypt. He was so astonished that he sent people all over the country to find the woman who had worn the sandal. When she was found, she became his wife.
By 1634, an Italian writer added more details to tell the story of “Cenerentola” (“girl of the ashes”). By this point, there was not only a missing shoe, but also a magical change, a wicked stepmother, and evil stepsisters.
In the 1800s, the Brothers Grimm published “Aschenputtel” (“the little ash girl”). As you might expect considering the source, it's a darker tale. There's no Fairy Godmother, but there is a wishing tree and helpful birds.
When the father remarries, the stepmother and stepsisters are very cruel, and the girl spends a lot of time crying at her mother's grave. When her father promises to bring gifts home from a trip, the stepdaughters ask for expensive ones. But Aschenputtel only wants the branch that knocked off her father’s hat. It’s from a hazel tree and she plants it where her mother was buried. She waters it with her tears, and the tree grows up strong and tall. There's also a bird that comes to see her when she prays by the tree. It drops gifts based on the things she wishes for.
The years go by and eventually, there's a three-day festival so that the prince can find a bride. All the young women in the kingdom are invited, but of course, Aschenputtel has nothing to wear and is forbidden to go. But after her father, stepmother and stepsisters leave for the festival, she goes to the graveyard. Once there, she asks for beautiful clothing to wear, and the bird brings it to her.
When Aschenputtel arrives in time for the party, she charms the prince, and they dance all afternoon. He escorts her home, but she gives him the slip and hides. When her father arrives home, he sees her sleeping in the ashes of the hearth and suspects nothing.
The next day, she dresses up even nicer and entertains the prince all day again. In the evening, she escapes from him once more. Then, on the third day, she's dressed in maximum bling. But this time, the prince is ready to trap her. His staff covers the stairway with a sticky substance, and she loses one of her golden slippers on the steps.
The prince shows up at Aschenputtel’s house to ask all the sisters to try on the slipper. The oldest stepdaughter cuts off her toes to try and make her foot fit. The next stepsister cut off part of her heel. (Remember, this is OG Brothers Grimm!). Thankfully, each time, birds noticed the blood and warned the prince of the sisters’ trickery.
Finally, Aschenputtel’s dad tells the prince that there is a filthy woman still at home. Of course, the shoe fits her. The prince puts her on his horse, and they ride to the palace while the helpful doves sit on her shoulders.
