Why OPI sells the same shade in two or three formats

A client who loves her gel manicure rarely wants a different colour on her toes, and she often wants a bottle at home for a quick fix. OPI makes most of its shades in more than one formula and gives each shade one code, so N25 is Big Apple Red whether it is a gel, a lacquer or a dip powder. This page groups the OPI products that are sold together on purpose: gel and lacquer duos, dip, gel and lacquer trios, Intelli-Gel combos with base and top, and larger salon sets.

Buying a matched set takes the guesswork out of reordering. You check one code against your chart, and every format you offer for that shade arrives in the same box. Every OPI formula we carry is vegan, and DTK sells OPI as an authorized reseller.

What comes in each type of OPI set

• Gel and lacquer duo: one OPI Intelli-Gel bottle and the matching OPI Nail Lacquer, each 0.5 oz. The gel cures under a lamp; the lacquer air-dries.
• 3-in-1 trio: a Powder Perfection dip jar (1.5 oz), a gel bottle (0.5 oz) and a nail lacquer (0.5 oz), all in one shade. Newer shades come as Intelli 3-in-1 sets with the Intelli-Gel formula; browse them in OPI 3-in-1 trio sets.
• Intelli-Gel combo: one or more colours packed with the Intelli-Gel Super Base Coat and a Super Gloss top coat, so a new tech has a complete gel system in one order. See OPI Intelli-Gel combos.
• Seasonal sets: when OPI launches a collection, DTK lists it as duo sets of 6 or 12 colours, Intelli 3-in-1 sets and lacquer sets, so you can take the whole palette at once.
• Salon duo sets: large boxes of 118 or 150 assorted gel and lacquer duos, and a 100-trio 3-in-1 box that ships with a free LDS nail lamp and nail drill.

Duo or trio: choose by your service menu

• You offer gel manicures and polish pedicures: the duo covers both. Gel on the hands, the matching lacquer on the toes, same code on the client card.
• You also offer dip: the trio adds a 1.5 oz Powder Perfection jar, so a client can switch from gel to dip without changing colour.
• You are setting up your first OPI gel station: start with an Intelli-Gel combo, because the base and top are already in the box.
• Your clients book seasonal colours: take the 6 or 12 colour set of the current OPI collection rather than ordering shade by shade.
• You need gel only: single gel bottles live in OPI gel colors, and single lacquers in OPI nail lacquer.

Gel, lacquer and dip compared

OPI notes that most of its shades coordinate across gel, lacquer and Powder Perfection. Shades still read a little differently by formula, because a dip is built in layers of powder and a gel in thin cured coats, so swatch a new code on a tip before you promise an exact match.

How to run a matched gel and lacquer service

1. Prep both: push back cuticles and clean the nail plate on hands and feet. On the gel nails, apply one coat of Bond-Aid.
2. Gel hands: one ultra-thin coat of Intelli-Gel Super Base, capping the free edge, cured 30 seconds. Shake the colour bottle, then apply two thin colour coats, curing each for 30 seconds.
3. Seal: a thin coat of Super Gloss top, capped and cured. If you use the Super Gloss that needs a wipe, remove the tacky layer with N.A.S. 99; the No Wipe version leaves nothing to remove.
4. Lacquer toes: a base coat, two coats of the matching OPI Nail Lacquer, then a top coat. No lamp is needed.
5. Send home: cuticle oil on all ten fingers, and the lacquer bottle goes home with the client for touch-ups between visits.

For the dip part of a trio: apply the base, dip at a 45 degree angle, brush on activator and let it air-dry, file and buff, then apply a second coat of activator before the top coat.

OPI shades that work well as sets

The shades clients wear on both hands and feet are the ones worth buying as a duo or trio. A few that are stocked as matched sets:

• S86 Bubble Bath and H22 Funny Bunny: the sheer warm pink and the milky white behind the glazed donut look. They are not interchangeable: Bubble Bath gives a flushed pink glow, Funny Bunny a clean milky white. Two coats of Funny Bunny under one coat of Bubble Bath is the combination most clients ask for.
• S061 OPI'm a Bubble Bunny: the Spring 2026 shade that combines Funny Bunny and Bubble Bath in one bottle, with no mixing. It comes as a duo and as an Intelli 3-in-1 set; the rest of that palette is in OPI Spring 2026 OPIcons.
• L64 Cajun Shrimp and A16 The Thrill of Brazil: two warm reds. Cajun Shrimp is a coral-red with spring and vacation energy; The Thrill of Brazil is a red-orange that suits olive and tan skin.
• H08 I'm Not Really a Waitress: a deep ruby with pearl shimmer for evening and holiday sets.

Planning OPI sets around the year

OPI shades do not all sell at the same time, and matched sets make the most sense for the colours a client will wear on hands and feet in the same season. Our seasonal chart for OPI tracks roughly 60 shades that suit spring, close to 90 for summer, about 60 for fall and more than 90 for winter, with plenty of shades sitting in more than one season.

• All year: H22 Funny Bunny, L00 Alpine Snow, T65 Put It In Neutral and SH4 work in every season, so they are the safest codes to keep as duos or trios on the shelf at all times.
• Spring: soft pinks, milky whites and pastels, led by S86 Bubble Bath and the OPIcons remixes such as S061.
• Summer: brighter corals, reds and blues for pedicure season, when the lacquer half of a duo earns its place.
• Fall and winter: burgundies, wines and deep purples such as L87 Malaga Wine and W42 Lincoln Park After Dark, plus the holiday reds.

A simple rule for a small salon: keep the all-year codes as trios if you offer dip, and rotate two or three seasonal duos every few months instead of holding every shade at once. Reorder by code from the single duo and trio listings when a shade runs low.

Stocking a salon with OPI sets

Large sets are the quickest way to put an OPI colour wall together. The assorted duo boxes hold 118 or 150 different gel and lacquer duos, so one order covers a wide spread of the range, and the 100-trio box does the same with dip added. These boxes are assorted rather than hand-picked, so check the listing for how shades are chosen before you order. Seasonal sets of 6 and 12 colours are the opposite approach: a tight palette that matches what OPI is promoting that season. Larger OPI bundles are grouped in OPI bulk sets.

Whatever you stock, keep the base and top coats for each system on the shelf next to the colour. The Intelli-Gel Super Base, the Super Gloss top coats and the lacquer base and top are in OPI base and top coat. Use a lamp that cures OPI gel properly; OPI recommends its Star Light lamp, and the full range of lamps is in UV and LED nail lamps.

Care between services

• Gel: remove it by soaking off with acetone and never pry or scrape it, so the natural nail stays intact for the next set.
• Lacquer: the client can refresh chips at home with the matching bottle and a fresh top coat.
• Staining: OPI Natural Nail Strengthener can go under any OPI Nail Lacquer shade; it acts as a barrier that helps prevent discoloration of the natural nail, which matters with deep reds and darks.
• Storage: keep gel bottles capped and away from the lamp and sunny windows, and shake Intelli-Gel colours before each use.
