You’ve seen them on Megan Fox’s and Cardi B’s hands. Now it’s time to enjoy them yourself. Today we’ll cover how to do aura nails.

How Hard Is It to Do Aura Nails at Home?

The pros use an airbrush to do this manicure. But if you’re willing to experiment, all you need is gel polish, acetone, and a few tools to get beautiful results.

Why Are They Called Aura Nails?

How to Do Aura Nails?

You might already know that the colors to use are based on your personal aura or energy field. Your aura reflects who you truly are.

However, if you don’t know anyone that can read auras or you don’t have a specialized camera on hand, it’s still possible to pick the best colors for aura nails. Here’s a little guide:

  • Purple is an artistic and creative nature.
  • Blue is a genuine person.
  • Green is for nature, openness, and growth.
  • Yellow is connected to happiness and curiosity.
  • Orange is joyful.
  • Red is for energy.
  • Black is for being grounded and in touch with reality.

You might feel drawn to several colors at once. We suggest that you pick only two for your first attempt at doing aura nails. You can always try more complicated designs next time.

Also, feel free to use either bold or pastel shades.

Once you’ve prepared your nails for the manicure (trimming, shaping, and buffing), you’ll still need:

FYI: Instead of thinning gel polish with acetone, you can use translucent jelly gel polish. (More on that in a moment.)

Ready? Then let’s get started!

How to Do Aura Nails with Gels

There are at least 5 ways to create aura nails with gel polish.

Method 1: Use an airbrush. This provides the most professional-looking results.

Method 2: Nail artist Angie Bonilla recommends starting with a neutral background and using a bold color on top. She mixes 4 drops of acetone with 3 drops of gel polish to get the translucent look.

You can do two colors by repeating the process. After the first diluted layer is cured, add a new color in the center of the first.

Method 3: Another option is to use a makeup sponge to add one color over another and fake the airbrushed look. It’s similar to doing ombré nails because you’ll blend the edges. Place one dot of polish in the center and press the sponge down to diffuse it and create a gorgeous gradient. (Some people use a cotton bud to apply the dot of color and blend it.)

An alternate technique is to apply the lighter color to the nail and cure it. Then brush an open circle (like an O) of the darker color onto a makeup sponge and press that onto the nail. You can add a dot of the base color in the middle of the O for better results.

Method 4: Then there’s blooming gel polish that lets you get a similar effect without using acetone, an airbrush, or sponges. Apply two layers of base coat, curing between them. Then brush on one coat of blooming gel. But don’t cure it until you add whatever other gel polish colors you want. The polish will float in the blooming gel until it’s cured.

Method 5: Lastly, jelly nude polish is transparent and glossy, ideal for creating aura nails. There are several colors available to match your personal energy. Here’s an example:

Can You Do Aura Nails with Nail Lacquer?

It’s certainly possible to get the aura look with regular nail lacquer if you use the makeup sponge method. You’ll need to work fast because the polish air dries.

Apply the light color first. For instance, you could use Mellow Yellow.

Then paint an O shape of Purple Papa Razz on the flat base of a makeup sponge. Press that onto the nail for the gradient effect. Blend quickly with small movements. Once it dries, apply a top coat.

How to Remove Aura Nails

How to Remove Aura Nails

Sometimes, the manicure is so pretty that it’s sad to take it off. But nails grow out and eventually it’s time for a change. On the bright side, it’s not hard to remove aura nails and it gives you the chance to do them all over again in different colors!

Acetone will take off nail lacquer, gel polish, and dip powder. The lacquer dissolves easily when you scrub it with a soaked cotton ball, but you’ll need to do a little extra work on the gel and dip powder. Take the shine off the surface before soaking the nails and the acetone will work faster. Dip powder may take as long as 15 to 20 minutes to soften. When the polish has softened, use an orange stick to gently push it off. Then wipe the nails to remove any residue.

The unfortunate side effect of removing a manicure with acetone is that it causes dryness. Protect your skin by applying cuticle oil before soaking in acetone. Then reapply the oil when you’re all done.
