A Very Special Bear

The original Winnie the Pooh stories were collected in a book published in 1926. The author was a military veteran dealing with PTSD. He also happened to be an adoring father of a little boy named Christopher Robin. The bear is based on a stuffed animal that he gave his son and also inspired by a real living bear named Winnie who lived at the London zoo.

After World War I, the family moved away from the city to live near the forest in Sussex. This area resembles the Hundred Acre Wood in the stories. Christopher Robin brought along his other toys including Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo to keep his Pooh bear company.

If you’ve been charmed by the Winnie the Pooh stories that feel so comforting, it’s no accident. They were created by a man desiring peace and a simple life after living through the horrors of war.

Honey Nails

The first adventure that Winnie the Pooh has involves honey, of course. He’s in the forest when he hears buzzing and knows his favorite food must be nearby. He pretends to be a rain cloud and floats up to a beehive with the help of a blue balloon. His partner in crime is Christopher Robin who tries to fool the bees with an umbrella. Pretty soon, it’s clear the bees are not deceived, and Pooh is stuck up in the air.

This wasn’t the only time that Pooh got into trouble over honey. In the second tale, he has eaten so much of it that he gets stuck in Rabbit’s doorway. Christopher Robin comes to the rescue to put Winnie the Pooh on a diet.

Since it’s obvious that Pooh and honey go together, the artist has included both in this yellow and brown set. You can see Pooh’s smile since he’s side-by-side with overflowing honey.

Notice that the honey pot nails are matte brown while the syrup itself is glossy yellow. That’s lovely attention to detail and it gives the set extra depth and personality. You don’t need acrylic for something like this. Emboss gel provides plenty of texture and it’s odorless and easy to work with.

The man who illustrated the original Winnie the Pooh books was Ernest Howard Shepard, another veteran of World War I. (He also illustrated The Wind in the Willows). His work was praised for perfectly capturing the “wide-eyed innocence” and excitement of childhood with just a hint of melancholy.

It’s no easy task to draw Winnie the Pooh nails by hand. Here some of the images even appear to have a watercolor effect, something you might achieve with marble ink or Pat Pat Gel.

As for sketching the outlines and writing the words, we recommend line art gel that includes a precision brush in the bottle.

There Was a Real Winnie the Bear

There Was a Real Winnie the Bear

Once the real Christopher Robin visited the London Zoo and saw Winnie, a black bear, it was instant attraction. He made as many trips back as possible to see her. She’d arrived from Canada courtesy of a soldier who rescued her as a cub after a hunter killed her mother. The soldier named her Winnie because he loved the town of Winnipeg.

When the soldier was deployed to England, he took her with him and asked the zoo to take care of Winnie while he was in the field. She was one of the most popular animals there because she was so gentle.

But what about the “Pooh” part of Winnie’s name? That’s because Christopher Robin would exclaim “pooh!” in frustration, especially when trying to feed a local swan.

In the set below, you can just see parts of Pooh’s and Piglet’s faces on the thumbs. The rest of the design is devoted to flowers and bees.
