Frequently Asked Questions

Which OPI shades are on the winter page?+

Deep reds, wines and shimmers that DTK tags for winter, such as H08 I'm Not Really a Waitress, W52 Got the Blues for Red, N25 Big Apple Red, B78 Miami Beet and A16 Thrill of Brazil. Many are Intelli-Gel bottles, some are original GelColor, and there are 3-piece sets. Stock varies by listing, so check each shade.

What is the difference between Intelli-Gel and GelColor?+

Intelli-Gel is OPI's newer gel system, described by OPI as HEMA-free, with its own base and top coat. Original GelColor is the classic system, used with OPI's classic base and top. Titles on DTK say which system each bottle belongs to, for example Intelli-Gel or GelColor Original Gel Formula. Keep base, colour and top in the same system for the most predictable wear, and do not mix the two systems on one nail.

How do I apply OPI Intelli-Gel?+

Shake the bottle first. Apply the Intelli-Gel base and cure, apply thin coats of colour and cure each one, then finish with the Intelli-Gel top coat. Cure each layer for 30 seconds under the OPI Star Light lamp or about 2 minutes under a UV lamp. Cap the free edge with every layer, and keep each coat thin so it cures all the way through.

Is OPI gel HEMA-free?+

OPI describes Intelli-Gel as HEMA-free. For original GelColor, read the label of the exact bottle. HEMA-free does not mean a client can never react, because other acrylates can still cause sensitivity, so patch test clients who have reacted to gel before.

How do I remove OPI gel?+

Break the seal of the top coat with a file, then soak or wrap the nails in acetone according to OPI's directions for the system you used, and lift the softened gel gently with an orangewood stick rather than scraping. Finish with cuticle oil, especially after several gel services in a row. Never peel gel off, because peeling can take layers of the natural nail with it.
