Frequently Asked Questions

What is EMA acrylic liquid monomer?+

EMA (Ethyl Methacrylate) is the safer professional monomer used for acrylic nail extensions. Reacts with acrylic powder to form a hard durable nail enhancement. EMA is the FDA-recommended monomer for nail use — replacing the banned MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) found in cheap, unsafe products.

EMA vs MMA monomer — which should I buy?+

Always EMA. MMA (Methyl Methacrylate) was banned by FDA in nail products in the 1970s because it bonds too strongly to natural nail (causing severe damage on lifting), has stronger fumes, and triggers more allergies. All DTK-stocked monomers are EMA-formulated and CA Prop 65 compliant.

How do I mix monomer with acrylic powder?+

Use a clean glass dappen dish (never plastic — monomer dissolves plastic). Dip clean acrylic brush in monomer, drag along dish edge to remove excess (medium-wet bead), then touch into powder to form a ball. Place on nail and pat/press to shape. Self-levels in 10–15 seconds.

Why does my acrylic monomer smell so strong?+

All EMA monomer has a strong vapor smell — this is normal. Use in well-ventilated areas, with a desk fan blowing fumes AWAY from your face, and wear N95 mask for full-day salon use. Cover dappen dish between uses to slow evaporation.

Best EMA monomer brand for salons?+

DTK's top-rated EMA monomers: La Palm Liquid Monomer (popular salon choice, $25/8oz), Kiara Sky EMA (consistent setup time), and Mia Secret EMA (budget tier $15/8oz). All are CA Prop 65 compliant with MSDS available on request.

How long does a bottle of monomer last?+

In a busy salon doing 5–8 full acrylic sets daily: 8oz bottle lasts ~2 weeks, 16oz ~1 month, 32oz ~2 months. Always seal tightly between uses — monomer evaporates within 24 hours if left open. Buy 8oz or 16oz refills via DTK Bulk Save.
