What HEMA-free and TPO-free mean on a gel label

HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) is a monomer used in many gel systems, and it is one of the ingredients most often linked to allergic reactions in some clients and nail techs. TPO (diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide) is a photoinitiator, the part of the formula that reacts to the lamp so the gel cures. A HEMA-free gel leaves out the first; a TPO-free gel leaves out the second. Some lines remove both, some remove only HEMA.

One point matters before anything else on this page: HEMA-free does not mean reaction-free. Other acrylates can still cause a reaction, so a client with a history of sensitivity should be patch tested and should see her doctor about any medical concern. What a HEMA-free line gives a salon is a way to take the most common trigger out of the service, not a guarantee.

The six HEMA-free gel lines in this collection

Each line below is listed as HEMA-free by the brand that makes it. The TPO status differs from line to line, so it is stated for each one.

A'DOR HEMA-Free Gel Color

A'DOR is a vegan gel colour line made without HEMA and without TPO. That claim covers the A'DOR gel colours, including the 72-shade A'DOR Color Me Gel-Ons in 0.4 oz bottles; it does not extend to A'DOR nail art products such as wave or crack gel. Across its three gel colour collections, A'DOR offers around 280 HEMA-free shades, enough to cover every season from one brand. A'DOR is one of several HEMA-free brands we carry, not the only one.

DND HEMA & TPO Free Gel & Lacquer

A separate DND line, sold as a gel and lacquer duo in 0.5 fl oz (15 mL) bottles. DND lists it as HEMA-free, TPO-free, non-shrinking and rated for up to 21 days of chip-free wear with proper prep. Only this DND line carries the claim: the classic DND, DC and DIVA gels are standard formulas and are not sold as HEMA-free. Because each duo includes the matching lacquer, a client can wear the HEMA-free gel on her hands and the same shade number as an air-dry lacquer on her toes.

OPI Intelli-Gel

OPI's newer gel system, launched in 2024, is listed as HEMA-free, TPO-free and vegan. It uses the Intelli-Brush and a self-correcting formula that stays where it is placed, cures in 30 seconds under the OPI Star Light lamp and is rated for three weeks of wear. The Intelli-Gel Super Base base coat is also labelled HEMA-free. Gentle pressure on the Intelli-Brush thins the formula for a smooth coat, and releasing the pressure lets it set back up, so it does not flood the cuticle. Most shades give first-coat coverage and full payoff in two coats.

Kiara Sky Gel Pro

Kiara Sky describes Gel Pro as a four-free formula: no HEMA, no TPO, no TT and no TMPTA. The line uses the EaseGlide FiberBrush and a self-leveling texture, and Kiara Sky makes a HEMA-free rubber base to go under it. The brush is shaped to hug the cuticle, and most shades cover in one swipe, which keeps service times short. Kiara Sky rates the line for up to 21 days of wear and lists it as vegan.

Aprés Gel Couleur

Aprés lists its reformulated Gel Couleur as HEMA-free and TPO-free. Each colour comes in a 0.5 oz bottle and cures in 30 seconds per coat under LED, finished with the Aprés Non-Wipe Top Gelcoat. Because the claim belongs to the newer formula, check the label on the bottle you receive.

LAVIS cat eye gels

Every LAVIS cat eye collection is HEMA-free, from the CE magnetic sets to the single shades. TPO-free is confirmed only for the LAVIS B1 and B2 builder gels, not for the cat eye range, so treat LAVIS cat eye as HEMA-free only. The LAVIS builder gels, all HEMA-free, sit in LAVIS builder gel in the jar rather than in this grid.

Other gels you will see in this grid

This collection is built from product tags, so it also shows gels whose HEMA status we have not confirmed from the brand: Chaun Legend gel colours, SNS Pro LuxeHybrid gels and SNS Pro cat eye and poly gel sets, and the LAVIS PS sheer shades. Some of those listings carry HEMA-free wording in their titles or tags. Until the brand confirms it to us, we do not present them as HEMA-free on this page. If you are booking a client who reacts to HEMA, choose from the six lines above or read the ingredient label of the exact bottle before the service.

Building a HEMA-free service from base to top

A HEMA-free colour does not make the whole manicure HEMA-free. The base and top coat touch the nail too, so the client is only covered if every layer is a HEMA-free product.

  • OPI Intelli-Gel: the Intelli-Gel Super Base is labelled HEMA-free, which gives a matched base for the colour.
  • Kiara Sky Gel Pro: Kiara Sky makes a HEMA-free Gel Pro rubber base for the line.
  • DND HEMA & TPO Free: the colour works with any DND, DC or DIVA base and top, but those bases and tops are not sold as HEMA-free, so pair it with a base and top that are.
  • A'DOR: the HEMA-free claim covers the gel colours; check the label of the base and top you pair with them.

Keep the HEMA-free bottles together on one shelf, with their own brushes and files, so a sensitive client's set is not made with a bottle borrowed from the standard station.

How to choose a line

  • Clients ask for a brand by name: OPI Intelli-Gel and the DND HEMA & TPO Free duos are the names many clients already know.
  • You want the widest colour range: A'DOR, with its Gel-Ons and HEMA-Free Gel Color collections, and OPI Intelli-Gel cover the most shades.
  • Your clients also want lacquer: the DND HEMA & TPO Free duo includes the matching lacquer for pedicures and take-home touch-ups.
  • You want a no-TPO formula as well: pick A'DOR, DND HEMA & TPO Free, OPI Intelli-Gel, Kiara Sky Gel Pro or Aprés Gel Couleur.
  • You work on soft gel extensions: Aprés Gel Couleur is made to sit on Gel-X tips, where no base coat is needed.
  • You want a magnetic finish: LAVIS cat eye is the HEMA-free option here, used with a cat eye magnet.

Applying a HEMA-free gel

  1. Ask first: note any past reaction on the client card. If there has been one, patch test and keep the service on the HEMA-free shelf.
  2. Prep: push back the cuticle, remove the shine from the nail plate, then clean and dehydrate.
  3. Base: apply a thin layer of a HEMA-free base and cure it as the brand directs.
  4. Colour: two thin coats, capping the free edge, curing each coat. OPI Intelli-Gel cures in 30 seconds under the OPI Star Light; Aprés Gel Couleur in 30 seconds per coat under LED.
  5. Top: seal with a HEMA-free top, cap the edge again and cure fully.
  6. Keep gel off the skin: wipe away any gel that touches the cuticle or sidewall before the nail goes under the lamp, and keep brushes and bottle necks clean so uncured gel does not reach the skin.

Removal and aftercare

File the top layer to break the seal, soak in acetone until the gel softens, then lift it with an orangewood stick rather than scraping. Ask clients to oil their cuticles daily between appointments. If a client notices redness, itching or swelling around the nail after a service, she should remove the gel and see a doctor; do not cover the area with another set.

Stocking a HEMA-free shelf for a salon

Most salons do not need all six lines. A practical shelf is one full colour line plus its matched base and top, then a second line for the shades the first one lacks. Order the base and top at the same time as the colour, because a HEMA-free colour on a standard base defeats the purpose. Stock levels move often in this grid, so filter by availability before planning a shade wall, and check each listing for the exact formula claim on its label.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does HEMA-free and TPO-free gel polish mean?+

HEMA is a monomer used in many gels and one of the ingredients most often linked to allergic reactions. TPO is a photoinitiator that makes gel cure under the lamp. A HEMA-free gel leaves out HEMA; a TPO-free gel leaves out TPO. Some lines remove both and some remove only HEMA, so check the claim for each line before you book a sensitive client.

Which brands in this collection are HEMA-free?+

Six lines are listed as HEMA-free by their makers: A'DOR gel color, DND HEMA & TPO Free, OPI Intelli-Gel, Kiara Sky Gel Pro, Aprés Gel Couleur and LAVIS cat eye. All except LAVIS cat eye are also listed as TPO-free. Other gels shown in the grid, such as Chaun Legend, SNS Pro and LAVIS PS, have not been confirmed as HEMA-free by their brands, so read the label of the exact bottle.

Is a HEMA-free gel guaranteed not to cause a reaction?+

No. HEMA-free removes one common trigger, but other acrylates can still cause a reaction. Patch test any client with a history of sensitivity, keep gel off the skin before curing, and send a client with redness, itching or swelling to a doctor rather than applying another set over the irritated area. Note the products used on her client card so the next service can avoid them.

Do I need a HEMA-free base and top coat too?+

Yes, if the goal is a HEMA-free service, because every layer touches the nail. OPI makes a HEMA-free Intelli-Gel Super Base and Kiara Sky makes a HEMA-free Gel Pro rubber base. The DND HEMA & TPO Free colour works with DND, DC and DIVA bases and tops, but those are not sold as HEMA-free, so pair it with a base and top that are.

Are DND, DC and DIVA gels HEMA-free?+

Only the DND HEMA & TPO Free line is. The classic DND, DC and DIVA gels are standard formulas and should not be presented as HEMA-free. For a DND colour on a HEMA-sensitive client, choose a shade from the HEMA & TPO Free duos, which also include the matching lacquer for pedicures.
